Better World Books

Do you have old textbooks hanging around getting dusty?  Don’t know what to do with those books?  The answer is Better world books!

Better World Books uses the power of business to change the world by collecting and selling books online to donate books and fund literacy initiatives worldwide. Besides selling new titles, Better World Books supports book drives and collects used textbooks through a network of over 2,300 college campuses and partnerships with over 3,000 libraries nationwide. To date, Better World Books has converted more than 58 million books into over $10.4 million in funding for literacy and education. In the process, we’ve also diverted more than 40,000 tons of books from landfills. With more than 8 million new and used titles in stock, they are a self-sustaining, triple-bottom-line company that creates social, economic and environmental value for all our stakeholders.
All books are available with free shipping worldwide by utilizing the attached to send unwanted textbooks in to Better World Books on Kaplan Golden Key's behalf. Please remember that this is a textbook drive aimed at books used in a college setting that you as students no longer have use for and would like Better World Books to try to reuse. Donations this year from Kaplan students will be sold to benefit www.RoomtoRead.org and if they are unable to be sold, textbooks will be donated to www.BooksForAfrica.org.

Vacant Positions

Dear Golden Key Members;
We are looking for a few good men and women that would like to be a part of the executive board for this great chapter. Do you have the desire to be involved in an extracurricular?
This chapter has been and is involved in many charities providing volunteerism, community outreach, literacy and academics to name a few. We also provide our members with another way to be involved in their school in an online environment. How do you want to help others?
Today's job market is ultra-competitive and landing that new job or getting ahead at your old one is not as easy as it used to be. Companies want to see more than just a degree. A leadership position could be that competitive edge you need. Are you a leader?
If you answered yes to these questions then submit a statement for consideration for an executive board position for the Kaplan University Chapter of Golden Key. We currently are looking to fill the Membership Chair, Finance Chair and the Activities Chair positions.
These are interim positions that will end on March 15, 2013 and you must be an active student at Kaplan for that period.  We will be holding open elections for all executive board positions in February with the new officers taking their positions on March 1, 2013.  Accepting an interim position now would not disqualify anyone from running in the next election.
If you would like to apply for one of the vacant positions please do so no later than November 10, 2012.  The executive board will make their decisions on or about November 14, 2012.  Your submission should include your major, GPA, and why you feel you would be the best person for each particular position.  We will also accept video submissions but there is no extra weight given for a video submission.  For the description of the vacant positions please see the attached file.
Thank you all for your interest and good luck!
George Pammer, President
Kaplan University Chapter
Golden Key Honor Society

Chicago Graduation Update

Hello everyone!
I wanted to extend a heartfelt congratulation’s to all members that have recently graduated, and to those that participated in the Chicago graduation ceremony.  It was great to meet all of you that stopped by the Golden Key table to pick up your honor cords!  I saw a lot of smiling faces, and so many faces beaming with pride!  You earned it!

A special shout out to Lyndon Kubitz and Charles Jansen II, both writers for our chapter newsletter The Golden Scholar.  Being an online school we don’t often get to meet the people we regularly interact with in person.  It was great to finally meet both of you in person!  Thank you for your dedication and time spent writing articles for our chapter’s newsletter!
On behalf of the Executive Board: Best of luck in all life has to offer our graduating members!

2012 International Summit hosted by Georgia Tech

Good Afternoon Everyone!

As I mentioned in a previous email, the 2012 International Summit is being hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) on July 26-29. As a chapter, we have budgeted, and have been approved for, five of our members to attend this summit. While the agenda is not set yet, the summit will include such things as sessions for new officers and advisors; workshops focusing on personal and professional development of our members, advisors and alumni; an EXPO with graduate schools, partners and HR managers looking to recruit and hire interns and prospective graduates; and other events.

It is crucial for many reasons that we have all five of our allotted slots filled at this summit. There will be a lot of information presented and we need people to report that information back to us. While GK Headquarters will be paying for the registration, lodging (student dorms), and meals, the delegates will pay for their travel and other incidental expenses. However, the chapter will reimburse members for those expenses. Please keep in mind that, due to the processes that occur, reimbursement of those expenses can take up to 8 weeks.

Anyone interested in attending the summit, must be a current, active student member of our chapter. While alumni are more than welcome to attend, they are not eligible to be reimbursed for expenses. If you are interested in attending, please submit an essay explaining why you should be chosen as one of our chapter delegates and what you plan to bring to the summit as well as back from the summit no later than April 25th to kathleensullivan17@student.kaplan.edu.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you

NEWS UPDATE

April 11, 2012

Hello all Golden Key Members;

As the new President of the Golden Key Honor Society at Kaplan University I would like to convey my feelings of gratitude for being placed in this position.  I am nothing but a humble servant of the membership and hope that I can live up to the legacy that have been left by our past Presidents, especially Lilo Cartwright and Linda Dunckel.

We are starting something new here at Kaplan University Chapter of Golden Key, an e-mail update!  We feel this will be a great way to communicate with the membership and for the membership to communicate with us.  We are here to serve you, so the more involved you get the better this chapter will work.  We are only as strong as our weakest member!  There are several ways to stay updated and in contact with KUGKHS, the first being by e-mail, KUGKHS@gmail.com.  We also have a new and improved blog which can be found at http://kugoldenkey.blogspot.com/ where you can sign up for email notifications, this way you will be automatically notified when the blog is update and events have been added.  Of course our facebook page is also available at https://www.facebook.com/KUGKHS and we are currently working on updating and improving our twitter link as well as our LinkedIn account.  Every member should also receive our monthly newsletter by e-mail (which can also be found on the blog) where all of the e-mail addresses for the executive board are listed at the end.

The executive board has been working on many new and exciting things that will add to the experience of being a member of Golden Key.  The first item is a special election.  We are in the process of accepting nominations for the position of secretary.  The person elected will be in the position for the remainder of the term, which will be until March 2013, and they must be an active student.  Please get your letter of intent and campaign statement into KUGKHS@gmail.com by April 22nd.  We would like to hold the election from April 23, 8PM to April 30, 8 PM.  Everyone will be emailed the link for voting.

We are working on a great new service project known as Better World Books.  This is a charitable organization where students can donate books, especially textbooks and Golden Key will receive the charitable credit.  The books are used to provide under privileged students that would not be able to afford the books or are sold and the funds used for the charity to purchase books.  We will be releasing more information on this next week.

We area also searching for students to attend out Golden Key International Summit in Atlanta, Georgia at the end of July.  Active students and alumni are invited to submit essays and active students will be reimbursed for their travel.  Georgia Tech will be hosting this event and will provide lodging.  We have been allotted five slots for attendance and this would be a great opportunity to expand your network as well as bring back some exciting features to KUGKHS!

We also hold regular meetings for the general membership and all members, including alumni, are invited to attend.  These live meetings are held on Adobe Connect and can be found at https://khe2.adobeconnect.com/r33289196/ on the last Monday of the month at 8 PM eastern with our next meeting coming on April 30.  The May meeting will be held on May 21 due to the Memorial Day Holiday. We try to present guest speakers at this meeting that will assist and educate our members on a variety of topics.  Our last meeting featured Garret Messerly discussing interviewing techniques.  The link for the recorded version of that meeting can be found on our facebook page.

We also hold monthly meetings for our newsletter, The Golden Scholar, and those are held on the third Friday of the month with the next meeting coming on Friday April 20, 2012 at 9 PM Eastern at the same Adobe Connect link as the general meeting.  Alumni are invited to attend and participate in the newsletter.

Of course, our classroom is still a great way to stay active and up to date on all the different things that we have going on and we are currently in the process of updating it.  There are also some unique discussion boards there and even a segment to post pictures of yourself!

Thank you for taking the time to read the update.  Together we can make this the greatest chapter Golden Key has!

Sincerely,

George Pammer, President
Kaplan University Chapter
Golden key Honor Society

President's Resignation

It is with much regret and a very heavy heart that I inform you of my intent to step down from my position as President of the Kaplan University Golden Key Chapter.  This is not a decision that I make lightly.  I have spent a great deal of time over the past few weeks reflecting on this situation, and feel that this decision is the best for everyone involved.  I believe that continuing in my leadership capacity will do more harm than good.  I feel that under the current circumstances, remaining in a top leadership position with Golden Key would hinder Chapter progress and lead to even more difficulties.  I see my decision as being in my best interest personally, and in the best interest of the Chapter as a whole.

I have spoken with George Pammer, Nate Daigle at Student Life and the advisors about my situation and intentions.  George has shared a willingness to step up and assume the duties of President at this time.  He is extremely capable and energetic, and demonstrates strong leadership skills.  I have no doubt that he will do a wonderful job, and he should be well received by the other Executive Board members and Chapter membership. I wish only the best of everything for the Kaplan Golden Key Chapter, and am willing to work with you all in making this an easy transition.  Please let me know how I may be of further assistance. Please know, that I appreciate all of the help and support that you have given me.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Dunkel

GK International Summit

From the desk of Paul R. Chapman, Communications Chair for The Kaplan University Chapter of The Golden Key International Honour Society
March 28, 2012
Good Afternoon Everyone!

Our chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society had reached Gold Status in 2011. In order for us to remain in that status, there are many things that we need to do this year. One of those is to have delegates at either a GK Regional Summit or GK’s International Summit.

The 2012 International Summit is being hosted by Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) on July 26-29. As a chapter, we have budgeted, and have been approved for, five of our members to attend this summit.
